Maitz created the iconic Captain Morgan spiced rum character in 1982 introducing the brand into the marketplace. He was commissioned 5 times by Seagrams & Sons to produce art for National ad campaigns. Diageo, a London based corporation, now owns the product and has since replaced his work with art based upon the image Maitz initiated. He has been commissioned by the National Geographic Society, and New York Publishing Houses. The History Channel, the Today Show, Wife Swap, and Dateline NBC have presented Maitz sea faring subjects in their broadcasts. Odyssey Marine Exploration has included Maitz art in their nationally touring exhibits. He produced art for Paramount, and Warner Brothers Studios working as concept artist on the animated feature films, Jimmy Neutron Boy Genius and Ant Bully.
Maitz’s works have included numerous exhibitions before a worldwide audience. Currently over thirty original paintings are on public exhibit at the Tampa Bay History Center in downtown Tampa.
Maitz received a Silver Medal from the Society of Illustrators, two Hugo awards for Best Artist, A Howard Award, and Inkpot award, Ten Chesley awards and an Award of Excellence at the 24th International Exhibition at the Maritime Gallery at Mystic Seaport.
Don Maitz is a Signature Member of the American Society of Marine Artists and lives in Florida with his wife, Janny Wurts.
I met Don at the annual Pirate Fest held in Fort Pierce, Florida. He was very friendly and at the end of the day, he handed me a shot glass with his art work and poured me some rum. We toasted to our new found friendship and I am excited that he accepted mine and Carl Fismer’s invitation to come back to Fort Pierce! Bring your rum matey’s and have him sign it.
